Ceramides + retinol

Commonly paired

What the sources say

A 2024 patch-test study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology tested ways to reduce retinol irritation. A lipid mixture of ceramide 3 and cholesterol (5%) reduced retinol-induced redness and inflammation compared with the vehicle alone. A different ingredient, PLG, did better than the lipid mixture. This was a small lab patch test of one specific mixture, not proof for every ceramide product. A US dermatology practice article also lists ceramides, hyaluronic acid and peptides as moisturizing ingredients that pair well with retinol and may reduce dryness.

What it does not mean

Ceramides may make retinol easier to tolerate, but they do not make it safe for everyone. Retinoids are not advised in pregnancy or when nursing without a clinician, and skin that is sensitive, or has eczema or rosacea, may react badly.

A cautious way to start

Add retinol slowly, use sunscreen every morning, patch-test first, and stop if irritation continues. Cosmetic guidance, not medical advice.
