Adapalene

What it does

A prescription-grade retinoid built for acne - the same cell-turnover engine as retinol, aimed at clogged pores. Its famous quirk: it's stable next to benzoyl peroxide, the one retinoid that is.

How to use it

Night only, a pea-size amount, moisturizer after (or before, as a buffer). Expect an adjustment period of dryness and possible purging in the first weeks.

What not to mix it with

• AHAs (same night) - see Retinoid + AHA
• BHAs (same night) - see Retinoid + BHA
• vitamin C (same session) - see Retinoid + vitamin C
• sulfur - see Sulfur + retinoid

What it gets along with

The benzoyl peroxide exception: adapalene tolerates it, so that pair can share a routine. Niacinamide and ceramide moisturizers also pair well.
